Our cover story this month features an interview with Deaf actress Sophie Woolley who plays Gabriella in Channel 4's new dark drama, Cast Offs. Cast as a Deaf character while Deaf herself, Sophie hopes the drama will blow any preconceptions of disability out of the water. See the centre pages for the low down on the drama and Sophie's interview. Once again we are asking readers to fill out a BDN questionnaire, to get your views on the magazine and to see how we can improve it on an ongoing basis. With Christmas on everyone's minds the BDA has launched a Design a Christmas Card competition for 2010. Now that the clocks have gone back, it's cold and dark and winter is just around the corner. It's time to stick the kettle on, pull up a chair in front of a roaring fire and settle down to catch up on the latest Deaf news from around the country. The BDA's annual Learn to Sign Week campaign took place last month, with over 40,000 school children and 30,000 staff from organisations up and down the country getting a taste of British Sign Language. Everyone had great fun, making full use of the resources available to them and raising money for the BDA. You can find out more about how people got involved on p22-23. 06 Sep 2009 September is here and in this issue of British Deaf News we bring you news about the official launch of this year's Learn to Sign Week, which took place in August at Camelot Theme Park in Lancashire. The medieval knights of Camelot helped get the campaign underway by braving to walk on broken glass. This was accompanied by a BSL-interpreted joust, to the delight of the show's crowd. This special day was celebrated far and wide. March 31st saw the British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust (BSLBT) launch its ‘Wicked’ magazine programme, with the first show airing on 1st April. The BSL programme is the first sign language television series entirely produced from script to screen by an all Deaf/BSL user production team and has had rave reviews so far. One of our special features this month looks at healthy eating and closing the gap on obesity; making sure that Deaf people have the same access to information on the issue as their hearing peers. Our cover story this month features a young Deaf model, Kellie Moody, who found fame winning the Miss Deaf UK competition back in 2007 and has since gone on to star in the TV programme Britain's Missing Top Model.
