  May cover BDN

01 May 2009 Check out the May issue of British Deaf News out now.

Following on from BSL Recognition Day on March 18th, we have a round-up of some of the events that took place across the UK and Ireland.  This special day was celebrated far and wide.

March 31st saw the British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust (BSLBT) launch its ‘Wicked’ magazine programme, with the first show airing on 1st April.  The BSL programme is the first sign language television series entirely produced from script to screen by an all Deaf/BSL user production team and has had rave reviews so far. Read the full launch story.

One of our special features this month looks at healthy eating and closing the gap on obesity; making sure that Deaf people have the same access to information on the issue as their hearing peers.  Deaflink Newcastle and the Community Food Initiative have produced a fantastic resource which includes a DVD presented in BSL and a booklet to help promote healthy eating and physical activity.

Find out how our Learn to Sign Week campaign is shaping up for this year (5th – 11th October 2009) and how schools and organisations can get involved. We continue our new ‘Meet the Staff’ series with BSL Director Avril Hepner giving us the low-down on her role within the BDA.

Visit your local Borders bookstore, ASDA or WHSmith to pick up a copy.

April cover BDN

8 April 2009 April is finally upon us. It's getting lighter and dare I say it, slightly warmer!

Our cover story this month features a young Deaf model, Kellie Moody, who found fame winning the Miss Deaf UK competition back in 2007 and has since gone on to star in the TV programme Britain's Missing Top Model.  Read Kellie's inspirational story and how she overcame bullying at school to be where she is today.

Our feature focus continues from last month's theme on BSL Access to counselling and legal advice.  An issue which is extremely prominent in today's current financial climate and is very worrying for some, due to job cuts, unemployment and the state of the housing market.

We've also got a new regular feature, Meet the Staff, where we will focus each month on a different member of staff at the BDA.  This means you can put faces to names and find out more about the valuable work we do.

Our signed sudoku competition gives you the chance to win an Easylink wireless multi-function alarm monitor.

Not forgetting our regular columns, News, Events, Research, Between Two Cultures, British Deaf History, BazzaDeaf, Vision, Sport plus lots more. So grab your copy now and enjoy reading...

7 July 2008 - BazzaDeaf Joins the Team at British Deaf News

Hi Everyone!

After hiding from the Editor for some months, I was coaxed out by the smell of cookies. She twisted my arm and threatened to break my fingers unless I write up what I have been up to. I am trying to work out why? I am simply a humble member of the Deaf Community who loves to have a laugh. Some of you may have read my comments on the Internet in Yahoo Deaf-UK and Deaf-Chat. A family member told me that people talk about them at dinner parties! One Deaf man came up to me saying that he prints them out and collects them in a file! So the Editor has finally tracked me down with the help of a couple Rotweilers called Sweetie and Fluffie....

To see this new column in full, pick up a copy of the July issue of British Deaf News, available from ASDA stores, Borders bookshops and selected WHSmith outlets, or subscribe here and receive 12 issues for the price of 10 direct to your door!!

1 December 2007 - It’s back!! By popular demand, British Deaf News (BDN) has returned – new and refreshed for 2008.

The New Year sees a new BDN, which has been given a fresh look to help take the British Deaf Association into a ‘new era’. This will replace the magazine which has been SignMatters for the past four years, but will remain a full-colour monthly magazine, priced at £2.00.

The decision to revert back to the much-loved title of BDN finally came about following the discussion which was held at the 2007 BDA Congress in Southport. Many people felt a strong preference to the magazine of old and wanted to see a move back to this style of magazine, with more deaf community news and a stronger emphasis on the Deaf community.

One of the new features will be the monthly message from the Board, which will be written by a different Board member each month. This is aimed at providing information about the Board and any activities planned or important news.

We hope you will enjoy the new-look BDN. Please get in touch with us if you have any feedback about the magazine or if you would like to submit an article, news item or would like a birth, marriage or death to be published. Email: mailto:signmatters@bda.org.uk
