About bipolar disorder
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that can cause extreme changes in mood, energy and activity. A person may have periods of very high mood, called mania or hypomania, and periods of depression. There can also be times when mood is stable.
Signs and symptoms
During a high mood, someone may feel very energetic, need less sleep, talk quickly, have racing thoughts or make impulsive decisions. During depression, symptoms can include persistent low mood, loss of interest, tiredness, problems with sleep or concentration, and thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
Getting help and treatment
Speak to a GP or mental health professional if you think you may have bipolar disorder. Treatment commonly includes medicines and talking therapies, together with regular follow-up and support. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999.
