How we fundraise
Your support helps the British Deaf Association protect, promote and preserve British Sign Language and advance the rights of Deaf people.
We raise funds through official donations, fundraising events, sponsored activities and other authorised appeals. We do not collect donations door to door.
Supporting the BDA safely
We are extremely grateful to everyone who chooses to support the British Deaf Association.
We want our supporters and members of the public to feel confident that their donation is genuine, secure and reaching the BDA. This page explains how we raise funds, how you can check whether an appeal is genuine and what to do if someone falsely claims to be collecting on our behalf.
Important fundraising notice
BDA does not collect donations door to door
The British Deaf Association does not carry out or authorise door-to-door collections.
We do not send staff, volunteers or third-party fundraisers to people’s homes to request donations, cash, card payments or banking information.
If someone visits your home claiming to collect money on behalf of the BDA, they are not acting with our permission. Please do not give them money or share any personal or financial information.
Genuine ways to support us
How the BDA raises funds
The BDA raises funds through official and clearly identified activities. These may include:
Online donations
Donations can be made through the official donation facilities linked from the BDA website. Before donating online, please check that you are using an official BDA webpage or an authorised fundraising page that clearly identifies the BDA as the beneficiary.
Fundraising events
The BDA may organise or participate in fundraising events. Details of official events will normally be shared through the BDA website, our official social media channels, email communications or other recognised BDA materials.
Sponsored activities
Individuals and groups may choose to raise money for the BDA through sponsored activities. Fundraisers may use an established third-party charity platform, such as JustGiving, or another fundraising method agreed with the BDA.
Other authorised appeals
From time to time, the BDA may run or support other fundraising appeals. Genuine appeals will clearly explain their purpose and provide a secure or traceable way to donate.
Check before you give
How to recognise and report suspicious fundraising
You should never feel pressured into making an immediate donation. Take a moment to check before giving money or sharing personal information.
How to check whether fundraising is genuine
A genuine BDA fundraising opportunity should:
- clearly identify the British Deaf Association;
- explain the purpose of the fundraising;
- provide a secure or traceable way to donate;
- use official BDA contact information or link to an official BDA webpage; and
- allow you to contact us if you would like confirmation.
If you are uncertain about a collector, fundraising page, event or appeal, please contact the BDA before donating.
If someone approaches your home
If someone visits your home claiming to collect for the BDA:
- do not give them money;
- do not provide bank, card or personal details;
- do not allow them into your home;
- end the conversation if you feel uncomfortable;
- report the incident to the police where appropriate; and
- let the BDA know what happened.
Only record details such as the person’s appearance, identification, vehicle or collection materials if it is safe to do so.
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, contact the emergency services.
Tell us about suspected fraudulent fundraising
Reports from members of the public can help us identify and respond to people falsely using the BDA’s name.
Please tell us:
- when and where the incident happened;
- what the person said;
- whether they showed any identification or materials;
- whether any money or personal information was provided; and
- whether the incident has already been reported to the police.
