Access & Inclusion (Health) Review

Historical BDA Scotland research into Deaf BSL users’ experiences of health services in Scotland. The original review gathered views from 189 people across 13 groups.

This is a historical resource and reflects the research findings and service context at the time of the original BDA Scotland project.

  • Participants reported recurring communication barriers, particularly around interpreting and access to information.
  • The review called for better interpreter booking and improved sharing of patients’ communication needs between services.
  • It recommended more BSL and Deaf awareness training for health staff.
  • It also highlighted the need for alternatives to telephone-only appointment communication.
