About cholesterol

Cholesterol is a fatty substance in your blood that your body needs to work properly. High cholesterol means there is too much cholesterol in your blood, which can increase the chance of heart and circulatory problems.

Checking cholesterol

High cholesterol usually does not cause symptoms. A blood test is used to check your cholesterol levels. Your overall risk also depends on other factors such as blood pressure, smoking, diabetes and family history.

Lowering high cholesterol

Changes such as eating a balanced diet with less saturated fat, being physically active, stopping smoking and keeping alcohol within recommended limits can help. Some people are also prescribed medicines, most commonly statins.
