About COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the name for a group of long-term lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties. It includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

Signs and symptoms

Common symptoms include shortness of breath, a persistent chesty cough with phlegm, frequent chest infections and wheezing. Symptoms often develop gradually and may become more noticeable over time.

Getting help and treatment

Speak to a GP if you have ongoing breathing problems or a persistent cough. There is no cure for COPD, but treatment can help manage symptoms and slow progression. Treatment can include stopping smoking, inhalers, pulmonary rehabilitation and other medicines or support recommended by your healthcare team.
