About ME/CFS
Myalgic encephalomyelitis, also called chronic fatigue syndrome or ME/CFS, is a long-term condition that can affect different parts of the body. The cause is not known.
Signs and symptoms
Symptoms can include severe tiredness that is not relieved by rest, symptoms becoming worse after physical or mental activity (post-exertional malaise), unrefreshing sleep, problems with thinking or concentration, pain and other symptoms. The pattern and severity can vary greatly between people.
Getting help and managing symptoms
Speak to a GP if you have persistent symptoms. Diagnosis involves assessing your symptoms and ruling out other possible causes. Management is individual and may include energy management and treatment for symptoms such as pain or sleep problems. NICE advises against programmes that use fixed increases in exercise, such as graded exercise therapy, as a treatment for ME/CFS.
