About Parkinson’s disease
Parkinson’s disease is a condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged over many years. It is linked to a reduction in dopamine, a chemical involved in controlling movement.
Signs and symptoms
The main movement symptoms are tremor, slowness of movement and stiff muscles. Parkinson’s can also cause other problems such as balance difficulties, sleep problems, changes in mood, loss of smell and memory difficulties.
Getting help and treatment
Speak to a GP if you are concerned about possible symptoms. There is currently no cure, but treatments can help manage symptoms and maintain quality of life. These can include medicines, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and, for some people, surgery.
