About pneumonia
Pneumonia is inflammation of the lungs, usually caused by an infection. It can range from a mild illness to a serious condition that needs hospital treatment.
Signs and symptoms
Symptoms can include a cough, shortness of breath, a high temperature, chest pain, body aches, tiredness and loss of appetite. Older people may also become confused.
Getting help and treatment
Contact a healthcare professional if you think you may have pneumonia, especially if you feel very unwell or your symptoms are getting worse. Some people need antibiotics and people who are seriously ill may need treatment in hospital. Call 999 for severe breathing difficulty or another medical emergency.
