About rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is a long-term autoimmune condition that causes inflammation in the joints. It commonly affects the hands, feet and wrists and can cause periods when symptoms become worse, known as flares.
Signs and symptoms
Common symptoms include joint pain, swelling and stiffness, often affecting more than one joint. Some people also have tiredness, weight loss or symptoms in other parts of the body.
Getting help and treatment
Speak to a GP if you have persistent joint pain, swelling or stiffness. Early diagnosis and treatment are important because they can reduce inflammation and help prevent joint damage. Treatment may include long-term disease-modifying medicines, pain relief, physiotherapy or occupational therapy, and sometimes surgery.
