Communicator Guide (CG) / Visual Impairment Support Worker (VISW)

Type: Full-time 36 hours per week / Part-time (up to 18 hours p.w.)
Salary: £15,000-£18,000 per annum
Additional info: Zero hours/Sessional Contracts also available (Mileage to be paid at 40p per mile)

Sight for Surrey is committed to working with vision impaired people and those with a combined sight and hearing loss in Surrey, to provide services so they may lead fuller, more independent lives.  We are a countywide charity based in Fetcham. 

The permanent Communicator Guide/Visual Impairment Support Worker will: 

  • be available to work as CG/VISW at short notice
  • start-up services
  • provide cover in an area where we are short of CG’s/VISW’s for an introductory period
  • provide emergency cover if the usual CG/VISW is unable to provide a service
  • offer CG/VISW ‘taster’ sessions so that a person can experience the service and decide if they wish to contract it.
  • complete risk assessments for people wishing to use the service
  • complete introductions of CG/VISW to people using the service
  • provide a variety of communication support, this may including BSL, Deafblind Manual and clear speech
  • work throughout the administrative county of Surrey.

In order to meet the growing demands on our Specialist One to One Service, we are seeking to recruit full and part time CG/VISW’s.

The hours need to be flexible to fit the personalised needs of the people with combined sight and hearing loss or those with a sight loss who wish to use the service.  This means some evening and weekend work will be required. 

The majority of people we work with are older people, who use clear speech.  However, we also provide services to people who are younger and people who use sign language as their first language.
