About depression

Depression is more than feeling unhappy or fed up for a few days. It can cause a persistent low mood and affect how you think, feel and manage everyday life for weeks or months.

Signs and symptoms

Symptoms can include sadness or hopelessness, losing interest in things you normally enjoy, low motivation, tiredness, changes in sleep or appetite, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

Getting help and treatment

Speak to a GP if symptoms are present most of the day, every day, for more than about two weeks, or if they are affecting your daily life. Treatment can include self-help, talking therapies and medicines. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999.
