About motor neurone disease

Motor neurone disease (MND) is an uncommon condition that affects nerve cells controlling movement. It causes muscle weakness that gets worse over time.

Signs and symptoms

Symptoms vary between people. They can include weakness in the hands, arms or legs, muscle cramps or twitching, difficulty speaking or swallowing, and eventually breathing problems.

Getting help and treatment

Speak to a GP if you have unexplained muscle weakness that is getting worse. There is currently no cure for MND, but specialist treatment and support can help manage symptoms, maintain independence and support communication, nutrition and breathing.
