About prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is cancer of the prostate, a small gland below the bladder. It usually affects people over 50, although anyone with a prostate can develop it.

Signs and symptoms

Early prostate cancer may not cause symptoms. When symptoms do occur they can include difficulty starting to pee, a weak flow, needing to pee more often or urgently, and feeling that the bladder has not emptied fully. These symptoms are common and can have causes other than cancer.

Getting help and treatment

Speak to a GP if you have urinary symptoms or are worried about your prostate-cancer risk. A PSA blood test can help check for prostate problems, but it has benefits and limitations that should be discussed with a healthcare professional. Treatment may include monitoring, surgery, radiotherapy, hormone therapy or chemotherapy.
