Welcome to the BDA Derbyshire Crime Project update.
The British Deaf Association project has been set up with funding from the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, Derbyshire. The aim is for the Deaf community to have increased awareness of how to access Police services in Derbyshire. One element of the project is to ask the Deaf Community about their awareness and experiences of Hate Crime. The BDA have set up a survey and I have already met and spoken to several Deaf people and had some very interesting responses. The ultimate aim is to start people talking about Hate Crime and incidents within the Deaf Community in Derbyshire.
We have arranged a Hate Crime Seminar which will be held on Wednesday 5th October at Derby Deaf Club, Middle Floor, Rycote Centre. We will start at 12.30pm and finish around 4pm – lunch is provided. BSL interpreters are booked.
The Hate Crime seminar will involve a series of presentations, one from Derbyshire County Council about Hate Crime, what it means and how it affects people from their perspective. The BDA will present the results of the survey that they have collated and a member from the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner who will talk about Hate Crime and what their strategic plans are for the future and how they plan to involve and include Deaf people. We will have some discussion groups and look at how to develop this in the future and how to support Deaf people when reporting Hate Crime and reduce the incidents of Hate Crime.
After this we will come back together where you will get the opportunity to see another element of the Crime Project which is an information video containing role play linked to both Emergency and Non-Emergency contact numbers – this is the official launch of the video resource.
