BSL Awareness programme for parents of Deaf Children

Have you been wondering how learning British Sign Language (BSL) could benefit your Deaf child and your family?

Would you like to find out how learning BSL could help your child access language from an early age, which will support them to better access education and social activities?

Training overview

This programme is aimed at hearing parents/carers of Deaf children who are considering learning or introducing BSL into their daily lives. The main outcomes include:

  • You will have an increased understanding of what BSL is.
  • Learn about BSL as a language.
  • Practice some introductory signs.
  • You will be inspired to learn the language further.

Parents/carers of Deaf children often are not aware of what BSL is as it is rarely promoted by hearing professionals.  This programme will also give parents/carers a safe space to:

  • Receive answers to commonly asked questions or concerns about communicating with a Deaf child through BSL.
  • Be signposted to suitable regional courses and resources to enable parents to progress with learning BSL.
  • Understand how learning BSL with Deaf children will assist them in becoming bilingual.
  • Understand why BSL is important in family lives and communication with Deaf children.
