Health and well-being – Resources in BSL

We have complied a number of health-related projects over the years from different regions of the United Kingdom. Specifically aimed to help BSL users and Deaf people with knowledge and understanding of health and well-being that otherwise they would have not received an appropriate access to information or resources.

Health – Northern Ireland

The British Deaf Association (BDA) NI, in partnership with Alzheimer’s Society NI, have produced an innovative DVD designed for people who are Deaf or have hearing loss.

This DVD sets out appropriate guidelines for meeting and caring for a person with dementia,  It is presented in both BSL and ISL along with subtitles and voiceover. To ensure its accessible by Deaf people, people  with hearing loss and their family, friends and carers.

Hard copies of the DVD is FREE and can be obtained by contacting:

Alice Johnston
Community Advocacy Officer

Health – Scotland

The BDA’s Advocacy and Sign Posting in Health (ASPH) project is for Deaf people who have been diagnosed with long term chronic or terminal conditions; for example: dementia, stroke, diabetes, cancer, multiple sclerosis (MS), ME, Parkinson’s disease, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Our experienced Deaf advocates around Scotland can offer one-to-one support throughout your treatment or care pathway.

For example, we can help you to consider the healthcare options that you have and make sure that you understand the roles of all the healthcare professionals involved in your care pathway.

We can also support you to make sure you understand what all of the different medications and medical treatments that you are receiving are, providing clear access to information in BSL.

We will make sure that you know what your condition is and how you can access information and support that is available, so that your personal journey will be more relaxed and less anxious.  We aim to reduce the number of barriers to access and improve services so that they meet your needs.

If you receive any English based leaflets/information about your condition, we can translate them into BSL resources.

Our advocates’ aim is to promote equal and clear communication between you and the healthcare professionals who are working with you, so that you have the same kind of care as hearing people do, throughout your illness.

BDA Scotland has two advocates; Avril Hepner, who works in central and southern Scotland, and Jean Pentland, who covers northern Scotland, the Highlands and islands.  Our Deaf Health Challenge Project is run by Katie Mowat, who consults with the Deaf community and service providers to make sure that information about healthcare services throughout Scotland is accessible.

So, if you or a Deaf friend of yours has a long term health condition, please do get in touch with us and we will be happy to support you.  You can find our contact details on the BDA website.

Avril can be contacted at: avril.hepner@bda.org.uk

Jean can be contacted at: cado.nthscot@bda.org.uk

Katie can be contacted at: health.scot@bda.org.uk
