We were extremely concerned to learn that this excellent specialist deaf unit in Islington is under threat for what appears to be purely budgetary reasons. Parents are rightly up in arms, and they must be listened to; they know what is right for their children, because they can see the benefits of their children being surrounded by their deaf peers every day, and learning in a language that is accessible to them.
International Day of Persons with Disabilities
The BDA’s vision to Protect, Preserve and Promote British Sign Language (BSL) and Irish Sign Language (ISL) in Northern Ireland conforms to the United Nations ethos that “disability inclusion is an essential condition to upholding human rights” and that includes Deaf people who use BSL and ISL.
Work to be done on census figures for BSL
The British Deaf Association (BDA) is pleased to see that the 2021 Census managed to reach and count more deaf BSL signers in England and Wales, an increase of nearly 50% in overall numbers since 2011.
