Message to Young Deaf People: Apply to join the WFDYS Youth Camp

Apply to join the WFDYS Youth Camp
South Korea: 2nd - 8th July 2023

Hi my name is Abigail,

I’m sorry for the delay in getting in touch with members to update you on progress of BDA Youth, however, I’m pleased to say that we have some exciting news!

Firstly, the BDA have been busy behind the scenes working hard to re-establish BDA Youth. We have been meeting with the President of WFDYS to understand more about how the BDA can re-establish and restructure BDA Youth in a way that will be collaborative, supportive and encouraging.

As there are currently no BDA Youth committee members, the president of WFDYS suggested the BDA Board takes over the remit of BDA Youth on a temporary basis.

Why is it a temporary basis? This leads me to the second exciting news. We want to ensure that we are able to give young Deaf people the opportunity to go to the WFDYS Camp in South Korea from 2 – 8 July 2023.

As a result, we are pleased to release an application process for young Deaf people to apply to attend the WFDYS Camp in South Korea this summer.

To apply, please fill out the registration form here:

Apply Now

And submit a BSL video no longer than 5 minutes in landscape mode:

  1. Your name, who you are and where you are from
  2. Your experience of being part of the Deaf community
  3. Your leadership experience
  4. and finally, if you are selected to go to camp, what will you do to give back to the community?

The deadline for applications is:

  1. Closing date 19 March 2023 5pm
  2. Shortlist 20 March 2023
  3. Interviews 22 – 23 March 2023
  4. We will be required to notify EFDYS by 31 March 2023.

The BDA board will assess and shortlist each application using a scoring schedule. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to interview. Four successful candidates will then be invited to represent BDA Youth at the WFDYS Camp.

Criteria:

  1. You must be aged 18 – 30. You will need to provide evidence of your age at interview.
  2. You are a member of BDA.
  3. You live in the UK.
  4. You will be willing to pay for your flights. The BDA will cover your camp fees and other registration costs.

Once the interviews have been completed, we will plan for the BDA to consult with young people to design the BDA Youth committee terms of reference and to re-establish BDA Youth.

The BDA Board’s Youth sub-committee comprises of:

  • Abigail Gorman, Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees
  • Hamza Shaikh, Trustee and former BDA Youth committee member
  • Sabina Iqbal, Trustee

Good luck and we shall look forward to receiving your applications.

Send your BSL application via WeTransfer to AbigailGormanTrustee@bda.org.uk
