You’ll Never Walk Alone
— in British Sign Language
For 135 years, Deaf signers have led, fought, and celebrated their language and culture together. Now, one of football’s most iconic anthems is brought to life in BSL.
Because strength comes from community.
And none of us should ever walk alone.
Our journey to get here
This project started with a simple question: how can Deaf fans fully take part in one of football’s most iconic anthems?
Early conversations between Liverpool fan groups, creative partners, and the Deaf, signing community made one thing clear: this had to be Deaf-led, community-informed, and linguistically authentic.
A Football Fan Council was formed, bringing together:
From the outset, the council faced a key challenge: capturing the full depth, emotion, and cultural meaning of You’ll Never Walk Alone in BSL, while creating a shared moment in the stadium that was accessible for hearing fans to be part of.
Honouring Deaf Language and Culture
At the heart of the project is the full sign-song interpretation, grounded in BSL grammar, rhythm, and visual expression. Every handshape, movement, and facial expression was chosen by Deaf people and experts to reflect authentic meaning, emotion, and cultural nuance.
Making it accessible for non-signing fans
We also wanted the song to be shared with everyone in the stadium, including fans with little or no prior experience of BSL.
This required a careful approach:
Rather than simplifying or collapsing one into the other, we created a layered approach:
This way, everyone can join in the moment, without compromising linguistic integrity or cultural authenticity.
