Nothing About Us Without Us: Promoting Deaf Inclusion and Visibility in the UK Media
Online CPD course for journalists
Date: Tuesday 3rd May 2022
Time: 9am to 11am
Delivered via Zoom
Over the past 12 months, the British media has shone a rare spotlight on Deaf achievements: Eastenders actress Rose Ayling-Ellis taking home the Strictly Come Dancing 2021 glitterball, Troy Kotsur winning the Best Supporting Actor for CODA at the Oscars, and British Sign Language (BSL) finally gaining legal recognition in UK law after many decades of campaigning.
At the same time, Deaf people continue to be routinely misrepresented, marginalised and excluded from the British media.
What can media outlets do to better promote Deaf inclusion and visibility across the entirety of their content?
During Deaf Awareness Week 2022, join us for this essential, eye-opening, hands-on introduction to the Deaf community, specifically designed for media outlets and freelancers. The session will be led by Cathy Heffernan, an experienced Deaf journalist, producer and director (formerly of The Guardian, Channel 4, and BSL Zone) who is currently working as a factual executive producer for the British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust.
The session will be delivered online in BSL with English interpretation and live captions.
