Calling all Deaf Poets!
Don't miss your chance to become the UK's BSL Poet Laureate 2025!
As the competition enters its third year, the British Deaf Association is thrilled to announce the search for the next Deaf British Sign Language (BSL) Poet Laureate! This exciting role offers a unique opportunity for a Deaf BSL signer to represent the Deaf community in the UK, using the power of BSL poetry to mark significant events throughout the year.
The BSL Poet Laureate 2025 will work closely with the BDA, collaborating to create and perform poetry that celebrates the richness of British Sign Language. They will also have the chance to showcase their work at events across the country, bringing BSL poetry to wider audiences and highlighting its creative and cultural significance.
Thanks to our generous sponsor, DeafZone Glastonbury, the 2025 BSL Poet Laureate winner will receive £500 and an incredible opportunity to perform on the Poetry and Words stage at Glastonbury 2025. The second-place winner will receive £200, while the third-place winner will be awarded £100.
Anyone 18 or older, who is Deaf and a BSL signer, is invited to apply. No prior experience in poetry or performance is required—just a passion for BSL and creative expression. BSL poetry can take many forms, including visual poetry, storytelling, and creative performances.
To enter, submit a video (maximum 2 minutes) of your original BSL piece on the theme: “What I hope for the future of BSL”. Send your video to bda@bda.org.uk by National BSL Day (28 April). Winners will be announced during Deaf Awareness Week (5–11 May).
The BSL Poet Laureate winner must be available to attend key events, including Glastonbury Festival, the BDA Conference Gala Dinner on 18 July, and BSL Fest on 19 July. We look forward to seeing your incredible contributions and celebrating the creativity of BSL poetry!
