DEAF HERITAGE CENTRE
The Deaf Heritage Centre preserves, celebrates and shares the history, culture and achievements of Deaf people in the UK.
Based at Manchester Deaf Centre, the Centre holds an important national collection of artefacts, photographs, artworks and archives that reflect Deaf life, identity and British Sign Language across generations.
From December 2025, the Deaf Heritage Centre forms part of the British Deaf Association’s national heritage programme. This stewardship ensures the long-term care, development and accessibility of the collection, while respecting and building on the work established by the British Deaf History Society.
The Centre plays a key role in safeguarding Deaf heritage as a living history. Under BDA stewardship, the focus is on responsible conservation, community involvement and widening access through education, exhibitions and digital engagement.
The Deaf Heritage Centre is not a regional office and does not provide frontline services. Its role is cultural, educational and historical, supporting Deaf identity, pride and understanding for current and future generations.
