The British Deaf Association (BDA) is delighted to announce the publication of a new 160 page book entitled: “A Pictorial History of the British Deaf Association”. The book, led by the British Deaf History Society (BDHS) in partnership with the BDA, commemorates the Association’s 125th year.
The book has been compiled by a team of dedicated Deaf volunteers who have discovered some rarely seen gems from the BDA archives and beyond which tell the story of our proud history and heritage. This unique project was made possible by the generous funding of the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Diane Webb, a BDHS volunteer and book team coordinator, said: “We have brought together some very important historical items which tell the story of the BDA from its inaugural formation meeting in 1890 to the present day. It has been a great privilege to be involved in a project that we know will be enjoyed by many for generations to come.”
Dr Terry Riley OBE, the chair of the BDA, added “We are extremely grateful to the volunteer team for their amazing and dedicated professionalism. They have produced a wonderful visual treat for everyone to enjoy. I hope the book will inspire readers to take up the cause of British Sign Language and help us towards the day when our language is legally protected and promoted across the UK. Importantly it will give a sense of pride and belonging to future generations when they read about our magnification organisation: THE BDA.”
