The BBC Red Button text based service enables viewers to access news, sports and business headlines, and general information on the weather, travel and lottery updates in a quick, concise and easily-accessible format.
The British Deaf Association (BDA) is concerned that the BBC decision to withdraw this service on 30 January 2020, will have an adverse impact on our members, particularly as the BBC’s proposed alternatives -its radio service, and transferring content online - is inaccessible to deaf people, and risks isolating those do not use the internet or the ability to access information online.
We ask that the BBC reviews its decision to withdraw the BBC Red Button Teletext service, consulting with members, charities and organisations of deaf, disabled and older people in a collaborative and inclusive approach to finding a solution.
