Last Monday 13th and Tuesday 14th November, BDA Northern Ireland (Dr Terry Riley OBE, BDA Chair, Majella McAteer, BDA Community Development Manager NI and both Brian Symington/John Carberry, Friends of the BDA) had the opportunity meeting with four other political parties to discuss the Sign Language Act:
Ulster Unionist Party - Robbie Butler MLA
People Before Profit - Gerry Carroll MLA
Traditional Unionist Voice - Jim Allister MLA
Green Party – Rowan Tunnicliffe, Senior Researcher
They all are very positive and keen to support our campaign to have a Sign Language Act established here in Northern Ireland to cover both British and Irish sign languages. All the parties have now also become much more aware of the issues facing the Deaf community and why an Act is so important.
